Activated alumina is a porous, highly dispersed solid substance with a high specific surface area, and its microporous structure has the characteristics required for catalytic action, such as adsorption performance, surface acidity and thermal stability. Activated alumina has a wide range of industrial uses, mainly used as desiccant, adsorbent, catalyst and catalyst carrier. Activated alumina is an excellent desiccant, used as a desiccant alumina to have a large specific surface area (250~350m2/g), widely used is a diameter of 3~5, 6~8mm spherical particles. Activated alumina can adsorb a large amount of water vapor, and the alumina saturated with water is easy to remove the physical adsorbed water by drying and reuse.
In addition to dry air, activated alumina is also used to remove moisture from various gases and organic liquids, such as for alcohol dehydration. Activated alumina is also a good adsorbent for oxides of ammonia, hydrogen fluoride and arsenic, and has been widely used as a high-quality fluoride remover for high-fluoride drinking water and an arsenic remover for the acid industry. Alumina catalyst is mainly used for olefin isomerization reaction and exchange reaction of hydrogen and heavy hydrogen (i.e. hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reaction), and can also be used as a new catalyst for acid gas recovery sulfur in oil refining equipment. In addition, composite catalysts composed of alumina and various metals and metal oxides are widely used. Activated alumina not only has a high specific surface area, suitable pore capacity and pore size, but also its sintered body has high mechanical strength and heat resistance, so it is widely used as a catalyst carrier (spherical or columnar). Catalysts with activated alumina as the carrier are Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 and Ni-W/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for hydrodesulfurization of heavy oil and residue oil, especially catalysts for automobile exhaust treatment are developing rapidly, it is using activated alumina as a carrier, precious metals as catalysts, which can rapidly oxidize hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides and other discharged gases.
